You’ve Never Seen a Sloppy Joe Hot Dog Like This!

Who doesn’t love Food Truck food?  Here is our take on a creative concoction that mixes two classics:  Sloppy Joes and hot dogs!  For our special Galley of the Sun take, we added Whisky Smoked Onions!  Find out:

Ingredients

 

Sloppy Joe topping:

2 pounds ground beef

2 celery ribs, chopped

1 small green pepper, finely chopped

1 small onion, chopped

1 can (10-3/4 ounces) condensed tomato soup, undiluted

1/4 cup packed brown sugar  

1/4 cup ketchup  

1 T cider vinegar  

1 T prepared mustard   (we used Zatarain’s Creole Mustard)

1-1/2 t Worcestershire sauce  

1 t pepper  

1/2 t salt  

1/4 t garlic powder  

 

Dogs:

16 hot dogs

16 hot dog buns, split

Optional: Warmed cheese dip and grilled onions

 

Directions

 

1. In a Dutch oven, cook the beef, celery, bell pepper and onion over medium heat until meat is no longer pink, 5-7 minutes.

2. Crumble beef; drain.

3. Stir in the tomato soup, brown sugar, ketchup, vinegar, mustard, Worcestershire sauce, pepper, salt and garlic powder; heat through.

4. Grill hot dogs, covered, over medium heat until heated through, 6-10 minutes, turning occasionally. (Since we are using homemade hot dogs, we cooked them in the Ninja XL Grill, on Roast setting at 350F for 10 minutes).

5. Serve on buns. Top each with 1/4 cup beef mixture.

6. If desired, top with warmed cheese dip and grilled onions.  (For our onions, we sliced 1 sweet onion, but it in a foil pan with 1/2 stick of butter and 1/4 cup of whisky and placed it in the smoker at 250F for 1.5 hours.)

7. ENJOY!
