Schwan’s Breaded Pork Fritters

Schwan’s Breaded Pork Fritters

Growing up, I loved Schwan’s Breaded Pork Fritters.  This is my attempt to recreate that favored food of my youth.

Things to know:

Is Schwan’s food delivery still around?

Sadly, no.  Yelloh, the frozen food delivery service formerly known as Schwan’s closed down in late 2024.

Does Schwan Man still exist?

What an interesting question!  While as stated above, the company ceased to exist in late 2024, there is no evidence that former delivery drivers have been “removed from existence.”

Is there another company like Yelloh?

Yelloh’s (formerly Schwan’s) top competitors include Myles Comfort Foods, Freshtohome, and Frizata. Myles Comfort Foods specializes in frozen meals within the food industry. The company offers a variety of frozen comfort foods made with clean ingredients.

How do I get Schwan’s to come to my house?

You are really not reading this, are you?

Can I buy frozen meals with food stamps?

Yes.  You can also buy food at room temperature with frozen food stamps.

Why did Schwan’s fail?

By the 2010s, the rise of grocery delivery apps and services like Instacart made Schwan’s door-to-door model seem outdated. While grocery stores adopted digital platforms, Schwan’s clung to its traditional operations for too long, losing relevance with younger consumers.

What is the difference between a pork fritter and a pork tenderloin?

A pork fritter is made from ground pork, similar to a hamburger patty, while a pork tenderloin is a lean, solid cut of meat from the pork loin that is often pounded thin and breaded. The key difference lies in the source: fritters are ground pork patties, and tenderloins are a whole muscle cut.

Why do they call it a fritter?

The word “fritter” has two distinct origins: the food, and the verb meaning “to waste.” The food noun comes from the Old French friture and Latin frictura, both related to “frying”. The verb “to fritter” comes from the obsolete word fitter, meaning “to break into small pieces”

Ingredients:

1 lb ground pork (75% lean, 25% fat)

2 t salt

2 t soy sauce

4 t sugar

3/4 cup cornstarch

1 cup water

2 medium onions (finely diced)

1 cup panko crumbs

1 cup bread crumbs (I used Italian)

3 eggs

Oil for frying

INSTRUCTIONS

1. Combine the pork, salt, soy sauce, sugar, corn starch, water and onions in a large bowl.

2. Make about tennis ball sized balls of the mixture.

3. Flatten the balls of meat until they are about 1/2 inch think and place on a parchment paper lined baking sheet.

4. Place your naked fritters into the freezer and freeze for 30-90 minutes.

5. Remove the fritters from the freezer, dip in an egg wash, then press into a bowl of combined panko and bread crumbs.

6. Cook the fritters either in 350F veggie oil in a skillet, or in a deep fat fryer.  Should take about 6 minutes to achieve a golden brown crust and an internal temp of 160F.

7. Serve with rice and/or a veggie dish or, as we are doing, on white sandwich bread with a healthy helping of mayo.  ENJOY!
