1 T baking powder
1 t salt
2 T powdered milk
1 1/2 cups warm water
1 cup shortening
Extra flour to flour your hands
1. Put flour in bowl, add baking powder, salt and powdered milk.
2. Mix in warm water to form dough.
3. Cover hands in flour. Knead dough by hand until soft but not sticky.
4. Cover with a cloth and let stand for 15 minutes.
5. Shape dough into balls about 2 inches across then flatten by patting and stretching the dough.
6. Melt shortening about an inch deep in frying pan. When at 350-375F, put dough in pan. Fry one side till golden brown, then turn and fry the other.
7. Can be topped with honey, powdered sugar, etc. You can also make it savory by topping with cooked sausage, or fried egg…. but today, we are making tostadas!
For the tostadas
1. Spread a thin layer of refried beans on the frybread. (We used our Creamy Black Bean and Cilantro Dip from an earlier episode. See recipe below.)
2. Spread a layer of your favorite taco meat on the beans.
3. Top with your favorite toppings: shredded lettuce, pico de gallo (we used the homemade pico we did in an earlier episode. See recipe below) or diced tomatoes, Mexican creama, guacamole, avocados and REQUIRED: shredded cheese.
4. Optional: After you have added your toppings, place your tostada on a baking sheet and place in a 350F oven just long enough to begin to melt the cheese (about 10 minutes).
5. ENJOY!
