Things to know:

What does an Italian sandwich contain?

The constituents of a traditional Italian sandwich, or Italian sub/hoagie, include crusty Italian bread filled with layers of cured meats like Genoa salami, capicola, pepperoni and ham, sliced provolone cheese, and fresh vegetables such as shredded lettuce, sliced tomatoes, and red onion. The sandwich is often dressed with a mixture of olive oil and red wine vinegar and seasoned with salt, pepper, and dried oregano.

What is the difference between a slider and a burger?

A slider is essentially a miniature burger or sandwich, defined primarily by its smaller size, typically made with a smaller patty (around 2-4 ounces) and a smaller bun or dinner roll. While a burger is usually intended as a full meal, a slider functions as an appetizer, snack, or part of a meal where multiple flavors can be tried. “Slider” can also refer to any small sandwich, not just a hamburger.

Is salami usually pork or beef?

Though salami is typically made from pork, it can also be made from beef, veal, or a combination of meats, as well as other less common meats like duck or venison. The specific ingredients depend on the type and origin of the salami, with some regional varieties and artisan products using different meat bases, while most commercial salamis are pork-based.

Are pepperoncinis and banana peppers the same thing?

No, though they are often confused due to their similar size, color, and mild heat. The main differences are their shape and origin. Banana peppers are of Hungarian origin and have a smooth, banana-like appearance with a rounded tip. Pepperoncinis hail from Italy and Greece and have a more wrinkled skin, a pointed tip. Pepperoncinis are also typically more tangy and slightly spicier than the milder, sweeter banana peppers.

Ingredients:

1 package of King Hawaiian Rolls or Slider Buns or a loaf of focaccia bread

8 oz provolone cheese Shredded

1 cup mozzarella cheese shredded

Garlic Aioli  or Chipotle Mayo

8 ounce deli ham thinly sliced (we used prosciutto)

8 oz deli pepperoni sliced

8 oz salami sliced

1/2 cup sliced pepperoncini   reserve juice

1/2 cup salted butter melted 1 stick

2 t juice from pepperoncini (divided)

1 T everything bagel seasoning or what we used: Cattleman’s Grill Italiano

1 t dried parsley

Serve with ½ -1 cup Italian dressing optional

Instructions

1. Preheat oven to 375 degrees F. Prepare a 9×13 baking dish or pan with foil and cooking spray.

2. Cut the buns in half (if you are lucky enough to have access to King Hawaiian Slider Buns, you will not need to cut!).  If you are using focaccia, skip this step and cut into slider sized portions after step 4.  Set the top aside and place the bottom in the prepared pan.

3. Evenly spread either garlic aioli or chipotle mayo on the bottom layer of buns/focaccia or sliders, then top with the shredded provolone.

4. Finely dice the deli meats, add to a bowl.  Add the sliced pepperoncinis and 1 teaspoon of the juice and mix thoroughly.  Place this meat mixture on top of the shredded provolone, then top with mozzarella cheese evenly.

5. Add roll/slider top on top.

6. In a small bowl, whisk together the butter and the remaining pepperoncini juice. Brush top of rolls with butter mixture, then evenly sprinkle seasonings on top.

7. Cover with foil and bake for 15 minutes.

8. Remove foil and bake for an additional 5 minutes. Serve immediately with Italian dressing for dipping.  ENJOY!
