Things to know:
What do you need for Oreo balls?
We will refrain from the obvious smart-ass comment. Oreo balls are a simple 3-ingredient no-bake treat consisting of 1 package (approx. 14–16 oz) of Oreo cookies (finely crushed), 8 oz of softened cream cheese, and 12–16 oz of melting chocolate (semi-sweet or white) for coating. Optional toppings include crushed Oreos, sprinkles, or peppermint…or maybe hooch!
Why are my Oreo balls so greasy?
Are you really going to keep lobbing me these questions that demand a smart-ass reply? There are a few reasons your Oreo balls may be oily. 1) You’ve used a little too much cream cheese (don’t worry, they’ll still taste good). 2) Your Oreo balls aren’t cold enough. Chill them a little longer before rolling and/or dipping.
What chocolate is best for Oreo balls?
The best chocolate for Oreo balls is melting wafers (such as Ghirardelli or Merckens) for ease of use, or high-quality baking chocolate bars (like Baker’s, Lindt, or Guittard) for the best flavor. These options provide a smooth, firm coating, whereas chocolate chips often remain too thick, and candy melts can taste waxy.
Why do Oreo balls crack?
The pressure of competing with other tried true and traditional holidays treats is a lot of pressure…The heat from the chocolate and then placing it on a cooler surface is usually the problem. The temp difference causes them to crack. Try drying them on a different surface or placing them on a “drop” of chocolate. Kind of to make a “stand” for the ball.
Ingredients
1 “Party Pack” Mint Oreo cookies (40 cookies)
8 oz cream cheese at room temperature
1 Package chocolate melting wafers or candy coating
1/2 cup of your favorite liqueur (we used Fennelly’s Mint Chocolate)
1. Place Oreo cookies in a food processor. Pulse until they are fine cookie crumbs.
2. Using a stand mixer or hand mixer, beat the cream cheese until it is smooth, about 1 minute. Add the Oreo cookie crumbs and hooch and mix until well combined.
3. Roll the Oreo mixture into small balls and place on a baking sheet or tray that has been lined with parchment paper or wax paper. Freeze the Oreo balls for 15 minutes.
4. Place the chocolate wafers (or candy coating) in a small microwave safe bowl. Melt according to instructions on packaging.
5. Remove the balls from the freezer and dip the balls into the melted chocolate. Make sure you cover the balls completely in chocolate.Place the dipped balls back on the baking tray with parchment paper or wax paper. Decorate with a drizzle of chocolate, additional crushed Oreos, sprinkles, crushed peppermint or crushed nuts, if desired.
6. Place the baking sheet with the Oreo balls in the refrigerator and chill for at least an hour, then serve and ENJOY!
