Things to know:

What is the origin of pigs in a blanket?

Pigs in a blanket have roots in British cuisine, evolving from sausages wrapped in bacon or pastry (like sausage rolls) and appearing in UK cookbooks by the 1950s, but the term gained traction in the U.S. with Betty Crocker’s Cooking for Kids in 1957, featuring cocktail wieners in dough, leading to distinct American and British versions, with Germany also having a similar pastry-wrapped sausage dish called Würstchen im Schlafrock.

What do Americans call pigs in blankets?

Americans call them “Pigs in a Blanket,” but the term refers to small sausages (like cocktail wieners or hot dogs) wrapped in croissant or biscuit dough and baked, a different dish from the British version (sausages wrapped in bacon). They are popular snacks, sometimes called “franks in a blanket,” or served as dinner with crescent rolls, often with dipping sauces.

What are pigs in a blanket called in the UK?

Pigs in blankets, kilted sausages or kilted soldiers is a dish served in the United Kingdom and Ireland consisting of small sausages (usually chipolatas) wrapped in bacon. They are a popular and traditional accompaniment to roast turkey in a Christmas dinner and are served as a side dish.

How long to cook pigs in a blanket?

Pigs in a blanket typically bake in about 12-15 minutes at 375°F (190°C), but it depends on size; look for golden-brown, puffed dough and hot sausages, which might take up to 20 minutes for larger ones, or even 35-40 mins in a skillet, all best served warm with dips.

Does HORMEL chili have pork?

Yes, traditional Hormel Chili (both with and without beans) uses a combination of beef and pork, along with ingredients like soy flour, tomatoes, and spices, but they also offer varieties with 100% beef or turkey for those avoiding pork.

Ingredients:

1 block smoked cream cheese

1 can Hormel No Beans Chili

Jus-Rol puff pastry (you need 1 package for every 3 hot dogs)

Hot dogs (we used Costco’s Kirkland Beef Hot Dogs)

shredded cheddar cheese

1. Mix the softened cream cheese and chili together in a bowl.

2. Cut the puff pastry into 3 equal parts.

3. Lay a hot dog in the center of the puff pastry sheet, add the chili-cream cheese mixture along the length of the hot dog.

4. Add a handful of cheddar cheese.

5. Seal the puff pastry around the hot dog.

6. Chuck your dog into the oven at 425F for about 20 minutes, or the puff pastry is browned to your liking.

7. Remove from oven, allow to cool, then serve and ENJOY!
