Things to know:
What are Pigs in a Blanket?
Pigs in a blanket are a popular appetizer or snack made of sausages (like cocktail wieners or hot dogs) wrapped in dough (such as crescent rolls, puff pastry, or biscuit dough) and baked until golden brown. They are often served with dipping sauces like ketchup, mustard, or BBQ sauce, and can be customized with seasonings like everything bagel seasoning or garlic butter. Variations include wrapping them in bacon or adding cheese and jalapeños.
Are pigs in blankets a British thing?
Pigs in blankets are a staple of a traditional British Sunday lunch and Christmas dinner.
What is the origin of Pigs in a Blanket?
Pigs in a blanket, as commonly known in the U.S.—cocktail sausages or hot dogs wrapped in biscuit dough—popularized in the 1950s, with a 1957 Betty Crocker cookbook for kids often credited with bringing the recipe to the mainstream. The concept stems from older European traditions of wrapping sausages in pastry or bacon.
What is the history of smoked queso?
Smoked queso, a popular variation of Tex-Mex chile con queso, gained massive popularity as a viral TikTok grilling trend during the summer of 2021. It combines traditional melted cheese dip with smoked meat or cheese, typically cooked in a foil pan on a barbecue grill, blending Tex-Mex, BBQ, and social media food trends.
Ingredients
2 8 oz blocks cream cheese at room temperature
2 cups shredded cheddar, monte jack or pepper jack (we used cheddar)
2 15 oz cans Hormel No Beans Chili
Puff Pastry or crescent rolls
Hot dogs (we used those monsters from Costco!)
1. In a 10.25” deep cast iron skillet, spread out the cream cheese as if you were forming a crust for a pizza.
2. Add your chili (optional – add diced jalapeños or diced chipotles in adobo for some heat).
3. Top the chili with the shredded cheese.
4. Chuck your skillet into your smoker at 250F for an hour, or until the cheese is fully melted, but not too browned.
5. Make the pigs in a blanket. We chose to cut the hot dogs into thirds to make this more of an appetizer than a meal, but you do you. You can either cook the pigs in a blanket on the smoker or oven, at the temperature and time recommended on the crescent roll or puff pastry packaging you are using.
6. Allow to cook for 10-15 minutes, unlike Bradley did in the video, then serve and ENJOY!
