Things to know:
What is Thanksgiving Day and why is it celebrated?
Colonists in New England and Canada regularly observed “thanksgivings,” days of prayer for such blessings as safe journeys, military victories, or abundant harvests. Americans model their holiday on a 1621 harvest feast shared between the Wampanoag people and the English colonists known as Pilgrims.
Which president refused to celebrate Thanksgiving?
Thomas Jefferson was the only early U.S. president to refuse to declare national days of thanksgiving or fasting, doing so throughout his presidency from 1801–1809. He believed such proclamations violated the separation of church and state, as he considered them to be state-sponsored religious acts.
When is Thanksgiving celebrated in the United States?
Thanksgiving in the United States is celebrated annually on the fourth Thursday of November. It is a federal holiday established to give thanks, usually marked by family gatherings, a large feast (often featuring turkey), parades and 3 glorious NFL games.
What is cranberry and its benefits?
Cranberries are nutrient-dense berries packed with antioxidants (especially proanthocyanidins) and vitamin C, known for preventing urinary tract infections (UTIs) by stopping bacteria from adhering to bladder walls. They support heart health by lowering blood pressure and improving cholesterol, boost digestion, and maintain oral health.
What is a meatball?
A meatball is a ball of ground meat mixed with other ingredients like breadcrumbs, onions, eggs, and seasonings, cooked by frying, baking, or simmering in sauce. They are a versatile dish found in many cuisines, from Italian-American spaghetti and meatballs to Swedish meatballs with gravy, and can be made from various meats like beef, pork, veal, or turkey, often in a blend for flavor and texture. Key to tender meatballs is not overworking the mixture and using a blend of meats with some fat content.
