Things to know:

How did Krispy Kreme get its name?

Krispy Kreme got its name because founder Vernon Rudolph bought a secret yeast-raised doughnut recipe from a New Orleans chef, and the name “Krispy Kreme” came with it, describing the desired texture: crispy outside, creamy inside, though spelled with ‘K’s for distinctive branding. Rudolph established the first shop in Winston-Salem, NC, in 1937, initially selling to grocers before cutting a hole in the wall to sell hot doughnuts directly to eager customers.

What is an interesting fact about Krispy Kreme?

The Founder of Krispy Kreme Sold His Car to Fund the Business. When Vernon Rudolph, the founder of Krispy Kreme, started his business in Winston-Salem, North Carolina, he didn’t have enough money to buy all the equipment he needed. So, he did something resourceful: he sold his car to raise funds.

What is Krispy Kreme best known for?

Krispy Kreme is famous for its melt-in-your-mouth, yeast-raised doughnuts, especially the iconic Original Glazed, often served warm when the “Hot Now” sign is on, allowing customers to see them made fresh on the factory line. They offer a variety of classic and seasonal flavors, but that signature light, fluffy texture and sweet glaze remain their hallmark, creating a beloved global brand since 1937.

Is Krispy Kreme owned by Shaq?

The retired NBA superstar Shaq didn’t just remain a loyal customer—he became an owner. In 2016, he made Krispy Kreme more than just a guilty pleasure by purchasing the iconic Ponce de Leon location in Atlanta. The store had been a community fixture for over 60 years, and Shaq reportedly paid around $2.75 million for it.
