Not Your Mama’s Sloppy Joes

Gregg makes one of his favorite dishes…but they are not your regular Sloppy Joes….

Ingredients:

2 T Butter

1 T Olive oil  

2 Lb ground beef (no leaner than 80/20)

1 Red Bell Pepper

1 Medium to Large Sweet Yellow Onion

5-6 Cloves Minced Garlic (about 4 Tbs)

1 T Tomato Paste  

1 T Harissa Paste  

1 & 1/3 C Ketchup  

2/3 C Water

2 T Brown Sugar

2 t Yellow Mustard

1 t Chili Powder  

1 t Worcestershire Sauce  

1 t Flavolcano Smokey Red Pepper Sauce

Salt & Pepper to Taste  

Instructions

1. Heat butter and olive oil in a large skillet over medium/medium high heat. Add beef and brown breaking into small pieces. Allow the pieces to get texture.

2. Cook for about 5-7 minutes and transfer the ground beef to a colander to drain. Drain but don’t wipe out the pan.

3. Return the skillet to the heat and add onions and bell pepper and cook for 2-3 minutes until soft. Add garlic and cook until fragrant.

4. Return the beef to the skillet and add tomato and harissa paste. Stir until well mixed.

5. Add ketchup, water brown sugar, mustard, chili powder, Worcestershire sauce, and Flavolcano red pepper sauce.

6. Stir well until well combined. Taste and add salt and pepper to liking.

7. Allow to simmer over medium heat for 10-20 minutes until reduced to desired thickness.

8. Remove and serve either on buns or open face as desired.  ENJOY!
