Mind-Blowing Hawaiian Garlic Shrimp Recipe You Won't Believe You Can Make!
At our local farmer’s market, there are a pair of men who sell “Hawaiian Garlic Shrimp.” We try to make it there as often as possible, and even when we do, it is about a 50/50 proposition that they will not already be sold out.
If you have ever been to the North Shore on Oahu, you have seen the crowds around the shrimp shacks and trucks. The two thought to be the best are Romy’s Kahuku Prawns and Shrimp which has been in operation for over 30 years, and Giovanni’s Shrimp Truck around since 1993. If you talk to the locals, it is not Hawaiian Garlic Shrimp, but Garlic Shrimp from Hawaii. It is not considered Hawaiian food, but a local food. Local food is unique to Hawaii. It is the category of food that came from blending different cultures that exist in Hawaii. These cultures include Chinese, Japanese, Korean, Filipino, and many more. Regardless what you call it, it is delicious, so let’s get to cooking!
Hawaiian Garlic Shrimp
Ingredients
2 lb. extra large shrimp, peeled and deveined
1/2 cup (slightly packed) minced fresh garlic (nearly 2 medium heads)
1 T paprika (Sweet, not smoked)
1/4 tsp cayenne pepper (optional)
Salt and freshly ground black pepper
12 T unsalted butter, diced into 1 Tbsp pieces
4 T olive oil
2 T fresh lemon juice
2 T minced fresh parsley (optional)
1. Using paper towels, dab shrimp dry of excess moisture on both sides. Place in a bowl.
2. Sprinkle with flour, paprika, cayenne pepper and salt and pepper as desired. Toss to evenly coat.
3. Melt butter with olive oil in a large 12-inch non-stick skillet.
4. Add garlic and saute 30 seconds until nicely fragrant (but not browning!).
5. Add shrimp in an even layer in skillet. Cook on first side until pinkish color on bottom, about 2 minutes. Then flip and cook opposite side until just cooked through, about 2 minutes longer.
6. Remove from heat, toss with lemon and garnish with parsley if using.
7. Serve right away topped with extra garlic butter sauce from pan. We love ours with white rice. ENJOY!
