Things to know:

What is the origin of meatballs?

Meatballs likely originated in ancient Persia, where cooks chopped or pounded leftover meat with spices and grains to create portable, nourishing meals. Known as kofta (from the Persian word kufta, meaning “to pound”), these early recipes spread across the Middle East, Asia, and Europe through trade routes and migrating cultures.

Ancient and Early Roots

Ancient Persia: Created as kofta, utilizing minced lamb or beef spiced with cumin, coriander, and cinnamon.

Ancient Rome: The classic cookbook Apicius featured early minced-meat recipes wrapped in pork caul.

China: “Lion’s Head” pork meatballs date back to the Qin or Han dynasty around 200 BC.

Global Evolution

Middle East & South Asia: Preserved the traditional spiced kofta family using lamb, beef, or chicken.

Southern Europe: Italy developed polpette in the late Middle Ages as small, seasoned veal or beef bites, served alone or in broth rather than with pasta.

Scandinavia: Sweden created köttbullar, a staple influenced by regional trade and finalized in 18th-century cookbooks like Cajsa Warg’s 1755 edition.

United States: The famous pairing of spaghetti and meatballs is an Italian-American creation from the early 20th century, combining affordable American abundance of meat and tomatoes with traditional polpette.

What is the brief history of Amazon?

Amazon was founded by Jeff Bezos on July 5, 1994, in a garage in Bellevue, Washington. Originally named Cadabra, the startup began as an online bookstore before expanding into a global e-commerce and technology giant selling “everything”. The company went public in 1997 and recorded its first full-year profit in 2003.

What’s so special about Spiceology?

Spiceology stands out because it focuses on absolute freshness, small-batch processing, and unique chef-driven blends rather than relying on cheap salt and sugar fillers. Founded by chefs, the company grinds spices only when ready to pack so they retain essential oils and punchy aromas.
